Riyadh’s long-term mobility goals
20 October 2026; Riyadh, KSA: Siemens Mobility is strengthening one of the Middle East’s most important urban transport systems with a major expansion of the Riyadh Metro fleet. Under a contract with the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), Siemens Mobility will deliver 27 new driverless four-car trains and 52 additional cars to extend existing two-car trains. This expansion significantly increases capacity across the Blue and Red Lines (Lines 1 and 2), supporting Riyadh’s ambition to provide sustainable, accessible, and high-quality public transport and contributing to the regional development goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

All vehicles will be built on the proven design of the current Riyadh Metro fleet, ensuring seamless integration and full system compatibility. Building on Siemens Mobility's successful delivery of the Turnkey system for Riyadh Metro's busiest Lines 1 and 2 (Blue and Red lines), the new vehicles further strengthen the company's long-standing partnership with the city and its commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and future-ready urban mobility solutions.

“This fleet expansion marks an important step
in strengthening Riyadh’s public transport network. By delivering
state-of-the-art, driverless trains for Lines 1 and 2, we are supporting the
Royal Commission for Riyadh City in operating a reliable, high-capacity metro
system for millions of people every day,” said Frank Hagemeier, Managing
Director, Siemens Mobility Saudi Arabia. “We are proud to contribute to a
system that strengthens sustainable mobility and supports the Kingdom’s
long-term vision to enhance the daily life of residents.”
Metro Riyadh: Automated, driverless metro
trains
The driverless “Riyadh Metro” trains are
engineered for the region’s demanding climatic conditions. A reinforced
air-conditioning system ensures comfortable temperatures, while specialized
filters and sealing systems minimize sand intrusion into key components such as
HVAC, traction systems, brakes, and bogies. Onboard systems provide
comprehensive passenger information, including announcements and multimedia
content. Designed for efficient operation, the metros offer optimized energy
consumption, low maintenance costs, and high recyclability.
Siemens Mobility in Saudi Arabia: Pioneering
Transportation Infrastructure
Siemens Mobility has contributed
significantly to the Kingdom's transportation infrastructure since 2006,
marking 20 years of transportation development. Along the successful delivery
of Riyadh Metro Line 1 (Blue Line) & L2 (Red Line) as a turnkey system,
Siemens also implemented the first European Train Control System in the GCC
(Gulf Cooperation Council) for the East-West Rail Line from Riyadh to Dammam,
enhancing both passenger and freight transport between Riyadh and Dammam. Its
involvement in the Haramain High-Speed Rail project underscores its commitment
to pioneering high-speed rail solutions. Additionally, Siemens Mobility played
a pivotal role in the electrification of the Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro
line in Mekkah, enhancing its operational efficiency.
