The New Saudi Winter Ritual: How the LG StanbyME 2 is Elevating Desert Gatherings

Saudi camping
culture meets next-generation portable technology
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – January 4, 2026: Saudi
Arabia's winter camping season represents one of the Kingdom's most cherished
traditions. From November through February, families escape to the desert for
multi-day camping trips, settling into traditional setups complete with floor
cushions, coffee brewing over open flames, and the timeless ritual of
storytelling under the stars. These gatherings have always been about
connection. Yet in recent years, they've faced a modern challenge: how to
maintain that communal spirit when everyone inevitably reaches for their
personal devices.
The LG StanbyME 2 is changing how Saudi families approach
winter camping, not by adding complexity to these outdoor traditions, but by
solving the fundamental problems that have fragmented shared entertainment
experiences in the desert.
The infrastructure problem in desert camping
Traditional Saudi camping culture involves specific rituals and setups. Families arrive with tents, majlis-style seating arrangements, and cooking equipment for elaborate outdoor meals. But entertainment technology has always been an awkward addition to this mix. Television screens require generators and stable surfaces. Tablets work for individuals but fragment group experiences. Smartphones create isolation rather than connection.

The challenge intensifies during Saudi Arabia's peak winter
events season. When Riyadh Season launches, when international sporting events
are broadcast live, and when families want to share photos from the day's
adventures, the desire for shared screen experiences conflicts with the
realities of outdoor infrastructure.
How StanbyME 2 addresses these challenges
The iF Design Award 2025-winning StanbyME 2's design
directly addresses the technical barriers that have limited outdoor
entertainment options for Saudi campers.
True portability without compromise
The 27-inch portable touchscreen detaches completely from
its stand, powered by a built-in battery that delivers up to 4 hours of
wireless playback in Eco/Low Power Mode. This eliminates the need for
generators or extension cords snaking through camping setups. Families can
carry the screen to different areas of their campsite, from the dining area
during meals to the majlis seating for evening entertainment, without
disrupting the traditional layout or ambiance.
The USB-C port (supporting USB 2.0, USB-C DP, and DP ALT) enables quick charging and connectivity with other devices, while HDMI and USB ports allow connections to laptops, game consoles, IPTV set-top boxes, and mobile devices. For extended camping trips, the screen automatically charges when connected to the docking stand's power cable.

Flexibility for every camping scenario
Saudi camping setups vary significantly. Some families
prefer traditional ground seating, others use portable chairs, and many
alternate between different arrangements throughout the day. StanbyME 2's
adjustable stand accommodates all of these with 360 ° rotation: ±90° rotation,
±25° tilt, and ±90° swivel. The screen can be angled for ground viewing during
coffee service, rotated to portrait orientation for scrolling through photos,
or swiveled to face different seating areas as the gathering shifts.
Alternatively, the folio cover transforms the device into a
tablet-like configuration, allowing family members to prop it at various angles
or carry it to different locations within the campsite. For those who prefer a
more permanent setup, the included wall-mount holder allows hanging the screen
inside camping tents or on chalet walls.
Built for group interaction
The full 27-inch touchscreen eliminates the need for remotes
in outdoor settings where small devices easily get lost in sand or cushions.
Multiple family members can interact directly with the screen - children
selecting educational content, adults accessing OTT streaming services (via
built-in apps or through AirPlay and Google Cast), or the entire group playing
board games directly on the display.
The magnetic clip-on remote provides additional control
options, with magnets that attach to either the screen or folio cover for
convenient storage. Far-field voice recognition (activated by saying "Hi
LG") allows hands-free operation even from a distance, useful when
someone's hands are occupied with coffee service or cooking.
Entertainment that matches the moment
The device's Mood Maker feature transforms the screen into
ambient entertainment between active viewing sessions. Desert camping
traditionally involves long stretches of relaxed conversation, and the Motion
Art Screen displays themed content - art posters, turntable visuals set to
music, landscape scenery, or stylized date and time displays - that enhance the
atmosphere without dominating attention.
The Let's Draw application turns the touchscreen into a
digital canvas, allowing family members to create art that can be displayed
through the Always On Display. For multigenerational camping trips, this
bridges traditional storytelling with modern creativity.
Real applications in Saudi winter camping
During Riyadh Season, for instance, families can livestream
performances or sports matches on the 27-inch screen, creating shared viewing
experiences that rival indoor setups. The touchscreen's intuitive interface
means elderly relatives who might struggle with smartphone apps can easily
navigate content with familiar tap-and-swipe gestures.
For extended camping trips, dual-monitor capability (via
HDMI and USB connections) empowers professional users. Remote workers can
maintain productivity during family getaways, or students can access
educational content without sacrificing outdoor time. The optional Smart Cam
(sold separately) facilitates video calls, allowing distant family members to
participate in camping gatherings virtually.
The device operates on LG webOS, offering tablet-like
portability while utilizing a television-based operating system optimized for
shared viewing rather than individual consumption. The webOS Re:New Program
ensures the device receives full software upgrades over five years, maintaining
compatibility with evolving streaming services and applications.
Why this matters for Saudi winter culture
Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 initiatives have intensified
domestic tourism and cultural activities during the winter months. AlUla's
Ancient Kingdoms Festival, MDLBEAST's Soundstorm, and expanded Riyadh Season
programming create more reasons for families to extend their outdoor
gatherings. The StanbyME 2 enables participation in these cultural moments
without requiring families to abandon their camping traditions or retreat to
indoor venues.
The shift is subtle but significant: rather than individuals
hunched over personal devices in isolation, families gather around a shared
screen that adapts to their needs rather than demanding they adapt to it.
Technology recedes into the background, supporting rather than defining the
experience.
The evolution of outdoor entertainment
The LG StanbyME 2 doesn't fundamentally change what Saudi
families do during winter camping; it simply removes the technical barriers
that have prevented technology from enhancing rather than disrupting those
experiences. The result is outdoor gatherings where entertainment technology
finally matches the flexibility and spontaneity of desert traditions
themselves.
For a culture that has always valued communal experiences,
that shift makes all the difference.
